City planner Dr Abdulrahman Makhlouf joined the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed, in the Sea Palace in 1974 where they drew up the design for the city grid we still know today – and named the main streets.

The central souq was Abu Dhabi's heart of retail in the 1970s, and dominated by street sellers. The situation was much the same in Dubai, which had been a trading hub since 1894. But there have been changes since the UAE was founded 42 years ago.
